Purpose: To evaluate the efficiency of scleral buckling surgery in pseudophakic retinal detachment cases.
Materials and Methods: Medical charts of patients who underwent scleral buckling surgery for pseudophakic retinal detachment were retrospectively reviewed. Demographic features of the patients, pre and postoperative anterior and posterior segment findings, surgical technique and recurrence rates were evaluated.
Results: Fifty four eyes of 54 patients (14 females, 40 males) were included. All eyes underwent scleral buckling surgery. In 46 (85.2%) eyes retina was completely reattached postoperatively. In 8 (14.8%) eyes that had complicated cataract surgery with posterior capsular rupture and vitreous loss, recurrence of the retinal detachment occurred during follow-up; these eyes underwent pars plana vitrectomy combined with either silicon oil or SF6 gas injection. Finally, in 53 eyes retina was completely reattached.
Conclusion: Scleral buckling surgery is an effective alternative in pseudophakic retinal detachment and it could be the first choice in selected cases.
Keywords : Pseudophakic retinal detachment, scleral buckling, pars plana vitrectomy
