SSK Ankara Göz Hastanesi Purpose : 72 eyes of 72 patients demonstrating rhegmatogenous retinal detachments of 10 days or less without macular involvement were studied.
Methods : All detachments were repaired with a primary scleral buckling procedure and primary failures were.excluded from the study. To compare the visual results eyes were operated on between 1 and 2 days (group A), 3 and 5 days (group B), or 6 and 10 days (group Ci after macular in-volvement.
Results : The mean postoperative visual acuity was 20/200. Visual acuity was 20/50 or better in 26 eyes (37%), between 20/60 and 20/200 in 21 eyes(29%) and less than 20/200 in 25 eyes(34%). There was no statistical difference in visual recovery between group A and group B, or grup B and group C. The postoperative visual acuities were statistically significantly different between group A and group C.
Conclusion : Retinal detachment with macular involvement and late surgical management have poor outcomes.
Keywords : Retinal detachment, macular involvement, vitreoretinal surgery
