Outcomes of Vitreoretinal Surgery in Giant Retinal Tears

Purpose: To evaluate the effectivity and safety of vitreoretinal surgery in patients with giant retinal tears.
Materials and Methods: 15 eyes of 15 patients (F\M:10\5) diagnosed giant retinal tear between April 2001- December 2006 were applied vitreoretinal surgery, silicon oil and 360° endolaser photocoagulation. We established; trauma in 8 (53%) cases, previous intraocular surgery in 4 cases (27%), degenerative myopia in 2 cases (13%) and Marfan syndrome in 1 case (7%) in preoperative evaluation. Pseudophakia in 5 (33%) cases and aphakia in 1 (7%) case were established. Lensectomy was applied to 3 cases (20%) and intraocular lens was implanted to 2 (13%) cases at the same seans. Silicone oil was meanly removed 10 month after the first surgery. Relapsed retinal detachment developed in 2 cases after silicone oil removal because of proliferative vitreoretinopathy. Retina was reattached with applying pars plana vitrectomy, membrane peeling and retinectomy.
Results: We observed all cases meanly 37 months (18-72 months). Visual acuity increased in 9 cases (60%), fixed in 5 cases (33%) and decreased in 1 case (7%). Visual acuity fixed in 3 cases (20%) and decreased in 1 case (7%) in patients with tears greater than 180°. Visual acuity inreased in 9 cases (60%) and fixed in 2 cases (13%) in the patients with tears smaller than 180°.
Conclusion: Vitreoretinal surgery was evaluated safe and effective method in cases with giant retinal tears.
