VISUAL PROGNOSIS IN EALES' DISEASE

SB Ankara Eğt. ve Araştırma Hast. Göz Kliniği Purpose: To evaluate the factors affecting visual prognosis in Eales disease.
Methods: The records of 28 eyes of 19 patients with Eales disease were reviewed retrospectively. 18 patients were male and 1 patient was female. During the course of the disease 24 eyes had Argon laser photocoagulation and 4 eyes had pars plana vitrectomy and endolaser photocoagulation treatment. Mean follow-up period was 22 months (6-42 months).
Results: In 7 of 9 eyes with visual acuity less than 0.1 prior to photocoagulation treatment improved at least 2 or more lines. Visual acuity remained the same in 1 eye with macular pucker and decreased in one eye due to tractional retinal detachment. In 15 eyes with visual acuity 0.2 or better prior to photocoagulation treatment remained the same or improved during follow-up. The visual acuity of 4 eyes of 3 patients who had pars plana vitrectomy and endolaser photocoagulation were at the level of light perception and hand motions prior to surgery and improved to 0.8 in 2 eyes, 0.7 in 1 eye and 0.1 in 1 eye.
Conclusion: The complications of the neovascularization in Bales disease can be prevented with early laser photocoagulation and can be successfully treated with pars plana vitrectomy and endolaser photocoagulation in cases with vitreous haemorrhage.
