Retained Subfoveal Liquid Perfluorocarbon

Sixty two year-old female patient who underwent cataract surgery 2 years ago, presented with retinal detachment and vitreous hemorrhage. She had been hospitalized immediately and underwent pars plana vitrectomy. Detachment of the inferior retina and retinal tear lying from 12 to 2 o'clock were detected intraoperatively. Intravitreal perfluorocarbon liquid (PFCL) was used to reattach the retina and perform laser retinopexy around the tear. The surgical procedure was ended by fluid-air exchange, saline rinse of PFCL and 20% SF6 gas tamponade. Examination of the patient at postoperative 2nd week revealed two drops of PFCL located subfoveally. Perfluorocarbon liquids which are important tools for complicated vitreoretinal surgeries may rarely be retained in vitreous or subretinal space and cause tissue toxicity. This condition occurs mostly in the presence of giant retinal tear and large size of periperal retinotomy. To prevent this complication, fluid-air exchange followed by thoroughly rinse of PFCLs with saline is essential.
