Purpose: To evaluate preoperative visual acuity, central macular thickness, and photoreceptor inner segment/outer segment (IS/OS) line of patients operated on for primary epiretinal membrane and to investigate if these parameters are correlated with final visual acuity.
Materials and Methods: Sixty eyes of 60 patients who were operated on for primary epiretinal membrane were included in the study. Preoperative and postoperative best corrected visual acuities (BCVA), central macular thickness (CMT), and optical coherence tomography (OCT) findings were evaluated retrospectively. Thirteen patients with preoperative visual acuity ≤0.1 comprised group 1 and 47 patients with visual acuity ≥0.2 comprised group 2.
Results: The mean BCVA was 0.33±0.18 preoperatively and 0.47±0.24 (0.10-0.90) at 6 months postoperatively. This increase in BCVA was considered statistically significant (p=0.000). The mean CMT was 419.6±48.1 μm preoperatively and 366.9±55.8 μm at 6 months postoperatively. This decrease was found to be significant (p=0.000). When group 2 was compared to group 1, the mean age was lower and the final visual acuity was higher in group 2 (p=0.0000). Compared to 9 patients with irregular IS/OS bands, 51 patients with normal IS/OS bands had significantly higher VA and lower CMT (p=0.000) levels. Preoperative CMT was 419.6±48.1 and 6-month postoperative CMT was 366.9±55.8 μm. This decrease was found to be significant (p=0.000).
Conclusion: Early surgical treatment of primary epiretinal membrane results in an increase in VA. This increase is significantly higher in patients with good preoperative VA, normal IS/OS line structure, and lower CMT.
