The Role of Thrombophilia in Patients with Central Retinal Vein Occlusion

Purpose: To determine whether presence of thrombophilia is a risk factor in patients with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO).

Materials and Methods: The study consisted of 22 patients followed-up for CRVO between January 2010 and January 2012 and 31 control subjects. The presence of factor V Leiden (FVL), prothrombin G20210A (PTG20210A), methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene C667T mutations and serum antithrombin III (AT III), homocysteine, factor V, factor VIII, Protein C, Protein S levels were tested and compared in patients and control group.

Results: There were 22 patients (7 females, 15 males) with CRVO and 31 controls (17 females, 14 males). The groups were similar regarding the age, gender and the presence of other risk factors such as systemic hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and glaucoma (p>0.05, Independent T test). No significant differences were found in the presence of FVL, PTG20210A, MTHFR gene C667T mutations and serum AT III, homocysteine, factor V, factor VIII, Protein C, protein S levels (p>0.05, Independent T test).

Conclusions: Presence of thrombophilic risk factors does not seem to have a significant effect for CRVO and routine investigation of thrombophilic risk factors in such patients is not suggested. Keywords : Central retinal vein occlusion, thrombophilia, risk factors
