Electrophysiological and Psychophysical Methods in Diabetes

Necmettin Erbakan Universiy Faculty of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology, Konya/TURKEY Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a disease of the retinal blood vessels. The primary pathophysiological process in DR is probably a metabolic derangement that leads to series of complex biochemical changes ending in vessel closures and altered permeability. These pathologies may affect local retinal areas in some diabetics while others may deteriorate to severe changes rather rapidly. In this sense, electrophysiological and psychophysical abnormalities are quite complex and often difficult to interpret in a given diabetic patient. Nevertheless, the conventional electroretinogram has been most used in patients with DR and recently colour vision testing using computergraphics has been very useful in detecting early diabetic retinal damage.
