Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy: Pathophysiology
UFUK ELGİN
Ulucanlar Eye Training nad Research Hospital, Ankara/TURKEY The association between Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and glaucoma has been wondered for a long time and the unfavorable effects of DM on the beginning and the progression of glaucoma has been discussed. The aim of this review is to investigate the relations between DM and primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PXG) and neovascular glaucoma (NVG) and summarize the previous reports about the epidemiology and pathogenesis of DM and glaucoma relationship. A certain association between DM and POAG has not been demonstrated before. Some reports have shown unfavorable effects of DM on the beginning and progression of POAG but these effects could not be demonstrated by some other reports with more number of subjects. Even DM has been qualified as a protective factor for POAG. However according to many previous reports, a strong association between DM and high intraocular pressure has been shown. Pseudoexfoliation syndrome and PXG have been shown to be in low rates in diabetic cases and this result was thought to be associated with crosslinks by glycosylation in basal membranes those could prevent the accumulation of pseudoexfoliation material. Also DM is thought to be the most important etiological factor for NVG. Keywords :
