EFFECT OF DEHYRATION ON CENTRAL RETINAL VEIN BLOOD FLOW

Celal Bayar Üniversitesi Tıp Fak. Göz Hastalıkları AD Purpose : To evaluate the effect of dehydration and fasting on central retinal vein (CRV) blood flow.
Methods : The mean blood flow velocities in CRV of both eyes of 30 healthy subjects were measured twice, in nonfasting conditions and after 18 hours of fasting and dehydration. Measurement values were compared statistically with each other to find if any difference existed in nonfasting and fasting-dehyrated conditions.
Findings: Mean blood flow of CRV in right eyes in nonfasting conditions was determined as 3.78±1.84 cm/sec, and as 2.89±1.05 cm/sec in fasting-dehydrated conditions; the difference was statistically significant (p=0.006). Similarly, mean blood flow of CRV in left eyes was determined as 3.74+1.72 cm/sec in nonfasting conditions, and as 2.90±1.12 cm/sec in fasting-dehy drated conditions; the difference was found to be statistically significant (p=0.004).
Conclusion : Dehydration and fasting slow the mean blood flow rate in CRV by interacting with hemodynamic balances. This result supports the view that prolonged dehyration plays a role in CRV occlusion.
