Evaluation of Photoreceptor Integrity, Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer, Central Macular and Ganglion Cell Complex Thickness in Amblyopia

Purpose: To evaluate the photoreceptor integrity, macular volume (MV), retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and central macular thickness (CMT) and ganglion cell complex (GCC) thickness in unilateral amblyopic patients using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT).

Material and Methods: The study included 86 eyes of 43 unilateral amblyopic patients either due to strabismus and/or anisometropia. The primary objective was to evaluate photoreceptor inner and outer segments (IS/OS) and external limiting membrane (ELM) integrity using OCT. MV, CMT, RNFL and GCC thickness were also compared between the amblyopic and fellow normal eyes.

Results: Mean age, of 23 female and 20 male patients, was 24.5±10.4 (7-39) years. Detailed evaluation of IS/OS and ELM, obtained by OCT, did not reveal any disruption. Mean CMT was 246.3±18.7 (214-288) μ in fellow normal eyes and 249.8±18.2 (215-290) μ in amblyopic eyes. Mean MV and GCC thickness were 10.3±0.46 (9.6-11.4) mm3 and 83.5±3.9 (78-91) μ, respectively, in fellow normal eyes; and 10.5±0.4 (9.5-11.5) mm3 ve 84.7±3.7 (77-90) μ, respectively, in amblyopic eyes. Mean RNFL thickness was 97.6±7.6 (84-115) μ in fellow normal eyes and 99.8±8.4 (84-121) μ in amblyopic eyes. There was no statistically significant difference between CMT, MV, GCC and RNFL thickness of the amblyopic and fellow eyes.

Conclusions: No disruption was detected at photoreceptor integrity (IS/OS and ELM layers) in unilateral amblyopic eyes. There was no statistically significant difference between CMT, MV, GCC and RNFL thicknesses of the amblyopic and fellow eyes. Keywords : Amblyopia, photoreceptor, optical coherence tomography
