Objective: In recent years, a relation between high levels of anticardiolipin antibodies (ACA) and recurrent venous and arterial thrombotic complications has been shown. In this study, we aimed to determine whether there was a relation between retinal venous obstruction (RVO) and ACA.
Material and method: A sample of 47 patients with RVO (34 branch RVO, 13 central RVO) and 29 subject as a control group were studied. The control group was matched for age and systemic-diseases to the patient group. Samples obtained from each group were assessed for Ig G and Ig M ACA by Enzyme-Linked Immunoabsorbant assay (ELISA).
Results: Ig G ACA was positive (>10 GPL U/ml), in 21.8% and 24.1 and Ig M ACA was positive (>7 MPL U/ml) in 12.7% and 13.8% of patients and controls groups, respectively. There was no significant important difference between patients and control groups in Ig ACA and Ig M ACA positivity (p>0.05).
Conclusion: There was no significant relation between ACA levels and RVO, so there is no need for systematic screening of these antibodies in patients with RVO, routinely.
