Yusuf ÖZERTÜRK1, Yavuz BARDAK1, Mustafa DURMUŞ1
Süleyman Demirel Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, Göz Hast. Anabilim Dalı/Isparta Purpose: To investigate the effect of vitreoretinal surgery on anatomic and visual prognosis in Behçet's disease.
Materials and method: Vitreo-retinal surgery was applied to 26 eyes of 21 patients with Behçet's Disease. Best corrected visual acuities, number and severity of attacks, and anterior and posterior pathologies are evaluated.
Results: The mean age of the patients was 33 years (minumum: 9; 57 years) and female/male ratio was 6/15. The mean follow up was 22 months (minumum: 9; maximum: 40 mo.). Visual acuity increased in 6 eyes (% 23), unchanged in 18 eyes (% 69), worsened in 2 eyes (% 8), Preoperative number of uveitic attacks jere 2-3 times in 8 eyes (%31), 4-5 times in 15 eyes (%58). 6 or more times in 3 eyes (%12) in a year. Postoperatively, attacks of uveitis relapsed 1-2 times annually in 13 eyes (% 50), 3-4 times in 10 eyes (38 %) and 5 times in 3 eyes (12 %) With a minimal treatment (corticosteroid and/or colchicine) attacks lasted 5-7 days in 12 eyes (46 %), 8-12 days in 10 eyes (39%) and 13-30 days in 4 eyes (15 %). In postoperative follow up there was vitreus hemorrhage in 2 eyes (8 %), cataract in 7 eyes (27 %), phthisis bulbi in 2 eyes (8 %). Tractional retinal detachment persisted in 1 eye (4 %) and cystoid macular edema in 3 eyes (12 %).
Conclusion: Vitreoretinal surgery was effective to decrease the number and severity of uveitic attacks, the need for the antiinflammatory medication and to restore visual rehabilitation in Behçet's disease.
