İ.Ü. Göz Hastalıkları Araştırma Merkezi Purpose : To report on the characteristics and the results of the surgical treatment of retinal detachment following photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK).
Methods: Four cases of retinal detachment following myopic PRK (2 cases) and myopic LASIK (2 cases) were retrospectively reviewed. Three of the patients had scleral buckling, external drainage of subretinal fluid, cryoretinopexy. Two of these patients had intravitreal sulphure hexafluoride gas injection at the time of operation One case had vitreoretinal surgery combined with scleral buckling and silicone oil injection.
Results: The mean age of patients was 33.7±8.8 (2male, 2 female). The mean spherical equivalent refraction before laser keratorefractive procedures was 8.59±5.85 D. The mean time interval between keratorefractive procedures and development of retinal detachment was 10.75±9.35 months. The mean follow up time were 3.0±1.63 months. Retinal detachment was attached with a single operation in 3 cases. One case had secondary operation because of recurrence of retinal detachment Postoperative visual acuity ranged between 0.1 and 0.5 in 3 cases and counting finger at 3 meters in 1 case.
Conclusion: Myopic patients who underwent PRK and LASIK procedures should be followed carefully for the development of retinal detachment and the peripheral retinal lesions predisposing to retinal tear should be treated prophylactically.
