İstanbul Ü.Göz Hastalıkları Araştırma Merkezi Purpose: To study the penetrance of argon blue and green laser light through the intraocular lenses (IOL) that were made from different materials in in-vitro conditions.
Methods: The setting of this experimental study was composed of argon blue and green laser unit (HGM), a detector to measure the laser light power and a fixator. IOL was fixed in the form in which laser light would be able to pass thorough the optical axis of IOL and to reach detector. Laser light was delivered at the power of 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400, 450, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000 mW in 490 nm blue and 514 nm green light spectrum. Laser light power was measured 10 times with and without fixating the IOL and procedure was repeated for each IOL and laser wa-velength. Average values were calculated and the results in control and IOL groups were compared using One-Way ANOVA (Analysis of variance) and Tukey's HSD test as a post hoc test.
Results: While pulses of 50 mW of 494 nm argon blue were measured as 49.7±0.55 mW in control group, it was 39.7±0.94 mW for polymetyl metacrylate IOL (PMMA), 38±0.51 mW for silicone IOL and 36.7±1.61 for acrylic IOL. While pulses of 50 mW of 514 nm argon green light were measured as 67.6±9.01 mW in control group, it was 44.7+ 0.63 mW for PMMA IOL, 43.6±0.75 mW for silicone IOL and 42.7±2.19 mW for acrylic IOL. One-way ANNOVA test revealed significant differences between control group and PMMA, silicone acrylic IOL groups for argon blue and green wavelength (p=0.001).
Conclusion: 494 nm argon blue and 514 nm argon green light loose some of it's energy passing through the PMMA, silicone and acrylic IOL, because of reflectance in in-vitro conditions.
