Uludağ Ü.Göz Hastalıkları ABD, Bursa Prediction of postoperative visual acuity of the patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachments (RD) involving the macula is generally imprecise. In this study, we used Lotmar visometer (LV) to predict postoperative visual outcome and investigated the correlation between the visometric results and postoperative visual acuities.
We measured the potential visual acuity with LV before the operation in the patients with phakic and pseudophakic RD who had clear optic media. The clinical variables such as preoperative visual acuity, duration and extension of RD that could influence ultimate visual acuity were recorded. Forthy consecutive patients who had no operative or postoperative complications threatening vision were included in the study. Localised scleral indentation was performed in 33 eyes while supplementary circling and drainage procedures were carried out in 7 eyes.
Only three patients (7.5 %) were able to see one or two Snellen lines preoperatively, the visual acuities were less than 0.1 in the others. Furthermore, potential vision of 0,1 or more was obtained with LV in 37 patients (92.5 %). The correlation beetween preoperative visometric prediction and postoperative Snellen results was found statistically significant (r= 0.61, P< 0.001). The predictive value of this method was higher than that of preoperative visual acuity, duration and extention of retinal detachment. Lotmar vizometer may be a valuable method in predicting the postoperative visual acuities in rhegmatogenous RD cases with macular involvement.
