Purpose: To investigate the effect of acute posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) on macula with optical coherence tomography (OCT).

Materials and Methods: Sixty-five patients who had symptomatic acute PVD in one eye detected with fundus examination and B-mode ultrasonography in Bozyaka Training and Research Hospital between January 2015 and January 2017 were included in the study and compared with healthy fellow eyes. In addition to routine ophthalmologic examinations of all patients, OCT measurements were performed to evaluate the macula and layers in detail.

Results: There was no significant difference between the eyes with PVD and the fellow healthy eyes in terms of best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), refraction spherical equivalent (SE), axial length and intraocular pressure (IOP). There were no statistically significant differences in central macular thickness (CMT), retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), ganglion cell complex (GCC), inner plexiform layer, inner nuclear layer, outer plexiform layer, photoreceptor layer and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) thicknesses. In addition, there was no change in the inner limiting membrane (ILM), the outer limiting membrane (OLM), the photoreceptor inner segment-outer segment (IS/OS) compounding band. Impairment in cone outer segment tip (COST) band was seen in one eye with PVD.

Conclusion: In this study, in which retinal layers were examined with OCT, no significant effect of acute PVD on the anatomic structure of the macula was observed. Keywords : Acute posterior vitreous detachment, macula, optical cohorence tomography
