Purpose: To quantify foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area, FAZ perimeter, acircularity index of FAZ (AI), foveal density (FD) and vessel density of macular capillary plexuses using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in healthy individuals.

Materials and Methods: Healthy individuals who visited our outpatient clinic for routine ophthalmic examination were evaluated. Inclusion criteria were best corrected visual acuity of at least 20/20 and no pathological findings in ophthalmic examination. The subjects were screened via FAZ, Non-Flow and Density assesment tool of OCTA. FAZ parameters and vessel density values of both superfi cial (SCP) and deep capillary plexuses (DCP) were measured.

Results: In this cross-sectional study 95 eyes of 50 healthy individuals (22 male, 28 female) were evaluated. The mean age was 40.85 ± 15.22 (18 - 68) years. The mean FAZ area in SCP and full retinal vasculature was 0.50 ± 0.13 (0.23 ± 0.76) and 0.28 ± 0.11 (0.07 - 0.51) mm2 respectively. FAZ perimeter, AI and FD were 2.00 ± 0.44 (0.98 - 2.75) mm, 1.09 ± 0.03 (1.05 - 1.23) and 55.83±4.01 (45.16-64.90)% respectively. The vessel density values of whole image in SCP and DCP were 51.48 ± 2.44 (43.10 - 55.90) and 53.23 ± 5.34 (40.80 - 65.00)% respectively.

Conclusion: OCTA provides objective values about FAZ area, perimeter, AI of FAZ, FD and vessel density of macular capillary plexuses. FD is a clinical indicator of macular capillary perfusion. These normative data may be of value as a reference of comparison in future studies of eyes with various pathologies. Keywords : Deep capillary plexus, foveal avascular zone, optical coherence tomography angiography, superficial capillary plexus, vessel density.
