Purpose : To determine the prevalance of retinopathy in people with newly discovered noninsulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM).
Method : 55 patients with newly discovered NIDDM in the Ophthalmology and Internal Medicine Clinics, between the dates February-1998 and May-1999 were involved in the study.
Results : Of those 55 patients 22 were men and 33 were women and the oldest was 78 whereas the youngest was 29. Retinopathy was diagnosed in 10 cases of whom 4 were men and 6 were women (18.18%). In only one of them the diabetic retinopathy was in preproliferative level and was in background diabetic retinopathy level in the others. 3 of 10 diabetic retinopathy patients (30%) and 21 of all had hypertension and one had macular edema. The mean period between the onset and detection of diabetes mellitus related systemic symptoms was 5.94 months (minimum 2 and maximum 12 months).
Conclusions : Diabetic retinopathy is common in people with newly discovered NIDDM. A meticulous care in opthalmologic examination is essential at diagnose stage. Early diagnose of the retinopathy related findings is a big chance in the enlightement of people about the importance of regular ophthalmologic examination and loss of vision in future due to diabetes.
Keywords : Retinopathy, newly discovered diabetes mellitus, prevalence, eye complications
