Akif ÖZDAMAR1, Cengiz ARAS1, Celal ARÇIKAN1
İ.Ü.Göz Hastalıkları Araştırma Merkezi Purpose : To evaluate retrospectively, the clinical results of the cases who underwent pars plana vitrectomy for the treatment of dropped nucleus during phacoemulsification.
Method : The data of 13 cases who had pars plana vitrectomy for the treatment of dropped nucleus during phacoemulsification were rewieved. Liquid perfluorocarbon were used in all the procedures. Nucleus fragments were removed from the eye by phacoemulsification in 4 cases, by manual method through the limbal incision in 4 cases and by microvit in 5 cases. Retinal tears were seen intraopreratively in 2 cases and treated with endolaser photocoagulation.
Results : Mean follow-up time was 13. 6 ± 6.64 months. The visual acuity was greater than 5/10 in 8 cases (61.5%), between 2/10 and 5/10 in 4 cases (30.7%) and 1/10 in 1 case (7%). 2 patients showed decrease in visual acuity due to cystoid macular edema. None of the patients had corneal endothelial decompansation.
Conclusion : Vitreous surgery improves visual acuity and decreases the complications due to dropped nucleus during the phacoemulsification.
Keywords : Phacoemulsification, Dropped Nucleus, Vitrectomy.
