Cerrahpaşa Tıp Fakültesi, Göz Hastalıkları Anabilim Dalı Purpose: To study the incidence, clinical characteristics and outcome of the perisilicone proliferation after use of silicone oil for the surgical treatment of retinal detachment complicated with proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR)
Materials and Methods: The charts and records of 31 patients who developed perisilicone proliferation (PSP), among 67 patients that undenvent vitrectomy and silicone oil injection for the treatment of retinal detachment with advanced PVR were reviewed. The data about the age, sex, follow-up time, pre and postoperative vision, biomicroscopy, fundus fmdings (the grade of PVR, the number of preoperative and iatrogenic retinal tears, the extent of PSP), surgical procedures, final retinal status were obtained from the charts.
Results: Mean age of 12 women and 19 men were 57.4 ± 7.83 years. Twenty-five of the 31 eyes (80 %) with PSP developed recurrent retinal detachment. Final retinal reattachment was achieved in 16(64%) eyes after reoperations. Secondary glaucoma developed in 8 eyes, four of which had also silicone keratopathy. Phitisis bulbi occurred in 9 eyes.
Conclusion: High rate of perisilicone proliferation in the eyes that undenvent vitrectomy and silicone oil injection for the surgical treatment of retinal detachment with advanced PVR reveals the importance of follow-up of the patients.
