2GATA H.Paşa Eğt Hastanesi Göz KIi., İSTANBUL Purpose : To discuss the effect of vitrectomy to the anatomic and visual prognosis of diabetic traction detachment and its complications.
Methods : Parsplana vitrectomy was performed on 68 eyes with diabetic traction retinal detachment of 64 patients ranging in age from 25 to 78 years. In 41 % of cases vitrectomy combined with 360 encircling scleral buckling, in 53 % intraocular gas (SF6) or sterile air, in 44% silicon oil was used.
Results : The reattachment of macula (Anatomic succes) occurred in 79% of cases. While the visual acuity were unchanged in 36 % of cases, 59 % were better and in 5 % were worse. The complications occurring after vitrectomy included vitreous hemorrhage (17 %), retinal tears (29 %), traction -rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (21 %), neovascular glaucoma (3 %), phthisis bulbi (1 %) and cataracts (26 %).
Conclusion : Parsplana vitrectomy providing an ambulatory vision and anatomical stability to the patient seems to be succesful and useful procedure in the treatment of diabetic traction retinal detachment eventhough visual improvement occurs much less and rate of complications was high.
