To evaluate the prevalence of glaucoma after vitrectomy with intravitreal silicone oil injection, we have carried out a retrospective study on 262 eyes of 247 patients who underwent pars plana vitrectomy with silicone oil injection from the years of 1992-1996. In all cases glaucoma was caused by trabecular meshwork obstruction due to silicone oil emulsification. The prevalence of the postoperative glaucoma has been found 14.8% and more frequent for recurrent (41.0%) and-posttraumatic (30.7%) retinal detachment with fibrous proliferative vitreoretinopathy. Glaucoma after pars plana vitrectomy and intravitreal silicone oil injection for complicated retinal detachments is a frequent complication mostly when surgery needs lensectomy and endophotocoagulation. Keywords : Vitreoretinal surgery, silicone oil, secondary glaucoma, complicated retinal detachment
