SSK Ankara Göz Hastanesi 72 eyes of 70 complicated retinal detachment cases (9 of those were female and others were male) with grade C 2-3 and D1-2 PVR were operated between the dates of March 1993 and April 1995 to evaluate the causes of failure in retinal detachment (RD) surgery. Recurrent retinal detachment were detected in 14 cases (recurrent proliferation on the vitreous body in 7.1%, perisilicone proliferation due to silicone oil in 14.2%, recurrent epiretinal traction in 35.9%, anterior PVR in 35.5%, and traction along the border of the photocoagulated retinal tear in7.1%). Intraoperative complications were vitreous hemorrhage in 2, iatrogenic tear in 1, subretinal hemorrhage in 2, subretinal perfluorocarbon liquid in 1, corneal edema in 1. We observed cataract in 7, fibrinoid reaction in 4, macular pucker in 5, increase of the intraocular pressure in 5, phitisis bulbi in 3, silicone oil in the anterior chamber in 5, choroidal detachment in 2, vitreous hemorrhage in 1, corneal decompensation in 1 at the postoperative period. Keywords : Complicated retinal detachment, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, retinal detachment surgery, pars plana vitrectomy, silicone oil
