Gazi Üniv Tıp Fak. Göz Hast. AD. The antioxidative mediators in retinal pigment epithelium that protect retina from oxidative trauma can no longer formation in case of retinal detachment.
This study compares the levels of Malondialdehyde using thiobarbituric acid method in cases that had undergone retinal detachment surgery. The levels of subretinal Malondialdehyde was found to be significantly higher in cases that were operated late (later than 1 month) and had proliferative vitreoretinopathy (p<0.005).
The results of the study suggest that it might be reasonable to protect the retina from photic injury and to use antioxidative drugs, to prevent radical induced cell damage.
