A role for IL-8 in üveitis has been postulated following the induction of liveitis by intravitreal inoculation in experimental animals and the expression of the IL-8 gene by cytokine-treated retinal pigment cells. We used a radioimmunoassay to detect IL-8 in 8 patients with Behcet's disease, 1 with idiopathic panüveitis, 1 with Bales' disease, 1 with acute retinal necrosis (ARN), and 8 with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). None of the patients had detectable IL-8 in the serum. However, IL-8 in the vitreous correlated with the severity of vitreal inflammation but not the presence of neovascularization. In particular, the patient with ARN had a remarkably high IL-8 level (4017.8 pg/ml) compared to Behcet's disease with vitritis (241.2 ± 26.8 pg/ml) or idiopathic panüveitis (483.0 pg/ml). Thus, the concentration of IL-8 within the vitreous may correlate with the severity of üveitis but not with complications such as neovascularization.
