INTRAVITREAL SUSTAINED DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEMS:
Murat KÖKSAL
Zonguldak Karaelmas Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Göz Hastalıkları AD Traditional treatment routes (oral, intravenous, topical etc) can't obtain sufficient theraupeutic concentrations for the treatment of posterior segment diseases of the eye due to anatomic and physiologic protective mechanisms such as blood-retina barrier. In the ideal drug treatment, the drug is demanded to effect the target tissue directly and at the desired time and concentration. For this purpose, liposomes, biodegradable polymers and nondegradable implants have been developed in the last 20 years. Liposomes didn't proceed farther than limited clinical studies due to a great deal of disadvantages. The most important disadvantage of nondegradable implants is the need for surgery and wide incisions. Biodegradable polymers produce the best results due to properties like ease of implantation, no need to remove and excellent bioavailability. It is most likely that various sustained drug delivery systems for the treatment of posterior segment diseases of the eye in the near future. Keywords : İntravitreal implant, drug delivery systems, liposome, biodegradable polymer.
