İ.Ü. Cerrahpaşa Tıp Fak. Göz. Hast. AD. In our study, 72 eyes of 36 Patients who has undergone retinal detachment surgery performing scleral buckling between October 93 and February 94 in retina section were investigated. Patients were divided into two groups according to the type of surgical procedure: encircling buckling and local buckling locating parallel to limbus. Non-operated eyes acted as controls. Axial lengths were determined with ultrasonography and refractive state with autorefractometer prior to operation and after the operation in the 1.st week, 1st month and 3rd. month. Value of refraction and axial length changes following detachment surgery were evaluated with Student-t test and chi-square test.
Differences of axial length of eyes with encircling buckling were determined 1.3 mm. in postoperative 1.st week, 1.06 mm. in 1. st. mount according to preoperative state and these differences were statistically significant (p<0.001,p<0.05). In the final examination, the difference between pre and postoperative state was 0.65 mm. and this value was not significant (P>0.05). Refractive state was able to be examined in thirty eyes. The eyes with encircling buckling became between 1 and 4 diopter myopia and eyes with local buckling locating parallel to limbus became astigmatism of more than 2 diopter. Changes on refraction were not significant (X2=5.86, p=0.75 and X2= 6.42, p=0.697).
