VITREORETINAL SURGERY FOR INTRARETINAL FOREIGN BODY
Remzi AVCI1, Bülent YAZICI1, Öner GELİŞKEN1, Haluk ERTÜRK1
Uludağ ÜTF Göz Hastalıkları ABD. Five cases whose ages were in range of 16 and 32 years presented to our clinic with intraretinal metalic foreign bodies (IRFB) between may and October 1994. All the foreign bodies were located in the posterior pole of the retina. The associated ocular pathologies were traumatic cataract (3), vitreous hemorage (2), endophthalmitis (1) and siderosis (1). In all of the cases, the foreign bodies were extracted through pars plana with a foreign body forceps after vitrectomy . Lensectomy was performed through pars plana in two cases and through limbus in one case, and intraocular lens (IOL) was implanted in the same operation to the latter one. Temporary intravitreal tamponade was applied with SF6 20% gas for 3 cases. Retinal tears were prophylactically photocoagulated with laser before operation in one case and after operation in two cases . After a follow-up time of averagely 9.2 months, 0.8 -1.0 level of visual acuity were obtained in 3 cases, while we were unsuccesful due to endophthalmitis in one case and postoperative intravitreal dense proliferation and fractional retinal detachment in the siderosis case. If the surgical intervention is made on time in the treatment of IRFB, better anatomical and yisual results are obtained by means of modern vitreoretinal surgical techniques. Keywords : Intraretinal foreign bolyars plana vitrectomy
