ANATOMICAL AND FUNCTIONAL RESULTS OF CONVENTIONAL RETINAL DETACHMENT SURGERY IN JUVENILE RETINAL DETACHMENT

Osmangazi Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Göz Hastalıkları A.D., Eskişehir Purpose: To evaluate the anatomic and functional results of conventional retinal detachment surgery in juvenile patients (age 18 years and younger).
Methods: Total of 24 eyes of 22 patients were operated on with scleral buckle (segmentel buckle-encircling band). The average age was 14,3±2.6 years and the average follow-up time was 21.8±19 months. Retinal detachment was associated with the following risk factors: miyopla (9 eyes) blunt trauma (7 eyes), and Marfan syndrome (2 eyes). In 6 eyes, no risk factors were present. Macula was detached in 21 eyes.
Results: Retina was re-attached successfully after first operations in 20 eyes (%83.3). Reattachment was achieved after repeat surgeries in 3 eyes. One eye remained detached. At the end of follow-up, the final anatomic success was % 96. Visual acuity was 0.1 or better in %12.5 (3/24) preoperatively, and %54 postoperatively.
Conclusion: Anatomic results after scleral buckling surgery are successful in juvenile retinal detachment without proliferative vitreoretinopathy. Although the anatomic success rate was high, lower functional results were achieved because of higher rate of macular involvement.
