We reviewed clinical characteristics, anatomic and visual results of 340 aphakic retinal detachment patients of at least 6 month follow-up (Mean=39±24.8 month) who underwent surgery between 1984-1995 (June) in Gazi University Medical Faculty Department of Ophthalmology. 272 of 340 patients (%80) had ICCE previously and 68 of 340 patients (%20) had ECCE. 241 of 340 patients (%70.8) were male and 99 of 340 patients (%29.2) were female. Mean age was 55.4±14.6. In 64 patients (%18.8), there was no detected retinal breaks. Superior temporal breaks (98/276=%35.5) and superior nasal breaks (95/276=%34.4) were found to be the most frequent localisations in the regmatogenous retinal detachment were present. We found macular involvement in 285 patients (%83.8) and presence of PVR Grade-C3-D in 73 patients (%21.5). Anatomic success rate was found 289 of 340 patients (%85) and 223 of 340 patients (%65.6) had a postoperative visual acuity 1/10 or more. Patients in groups with a detachment period longer than 3 months, presence of PVR grade-C3-D, total retinal detachment, no detected retinal breaks and preoperative visual results (P<0.05). In comparision with clinical characteristics, anatomic and visual results no statistical significant differences were found between ICCE and ECCE groups (p>0.05).
