THE EVALUATION OF THE EFFECT OF PANRETINAL PHOTOCAGULATION ON THE OPTIC NERVE HEAD TOPOGRAPHY

Akdeniz Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Göz Hastalıkları AD., Antalya Purpose: To evaluate the changes in the optic nerve head topography of type II diabetes patients with early proliferative diabetic retinopathy upon panretinal laser photocoagulation (PRP).
Material and Methods: PRP planned eyes of type II diabetes mellitus patients with early PDR were included in this study. The optic nerve head topograpic analysis of the patients were performed before, and 1 and 4 months after PRP using a confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope, HRT II (Heidelberg Engineering, GmbH, Heidelberg). Disc area, topographic standard deviation and 11 different topographic parameters were assessed.
Results: A total of 82 eyes of 63 PDR patients, 36 males and 27 females, were included in the study. The mean age of the patients was 54.4 ± 8.7years. The mean optic disc area of the patients was 2.11+ 0.42 mm2. Significant increase in disc area(p<0.05) and the significant differences in all parameters (p<0.05) studied were found 1 month after PRP. Four months after PRP, the increases in the neuroretinal rim area and the neuroretinal rim area/disc area ratio sustained whereas all other optic nerve head parameters were font to becume insignificant when compused with the pre-PRP values.
Conclusion: Significant changes were detektif in the optic nerve head topographic findings after PRP. Neuroretinal rim area and the neuroretinal rim area/disc area ratio were found to be consistently increased whereas all other changes et the 1st post PRP month disappear at the 4th post-PRP month.
