Posterior Subtenon Triamcinolone Acetonide in the Treatment of Macular Edema Secondary to the Retinal Vein Occlusion

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of posterior subtenon triamcinolone acetonide for macular edema secondary to the retinal vein occlusion

Materials and Methods: Twentyfour eyes of 24 patients with macular edema secondary to the retinal vein occlusion aged 45 to 82 years (average 62,5) was studied. Posterior subtenon injection of triamcinolone acetonide was applied to treat macular edema. The visual and anatomical responses were observed as well as complications related to the injection prosedure and triamsinolone acetonide medication. Patients was examined at first, third, and sixth months.

Results: In fourteen eyes (58.3%) of 24 patients visual acuity increased with anatomical healing. In four eyes (16.6%), there was anatomical healing but visual acuity were stabile due to ischemic maculopathy. In two eyes (8.3%) visual acuity stabile due to macular edema. Visual acuity decreased in 4 eyes (16.6%) because of in one eye with reccurent branch retinal vein occlusion and three eyes with dense retinal hemorage. Anatomical and functional healing was observed in 19 eyes (79.1%) at the third month. At sixth month; visual acuity increased in 19 eyes (79.1%) and was stabile in 4 eyes (16.6%). Visual acuity decreased in 1 eye (4.1%) at the sixth month. Intraocular pressure was measured as 22 mmHg in one eye at the firsth month.

Conclusion: Posterior subtenon triamcinolone acetonide injection is an effective therapeutic method in eyes with macular edema secondary to retinal vein occlusion. Visual prognosis may change with complications. Keywords : Retinal vein occlusion, macular edema, triamcinolone acetonide.
