Ankara Ulucanlar Göz Hastalıkları Merkezi ve Göz Bankası 2. Göz Kliniği, Ankara Purpose: To evaluate the anatomical and functional success of intravitreal perfluoropropane (C3F8) gas following silicon oil removal in cases of recurrent retinal detachment with secondary glaucoma due to silicon oil emulsification
Materials and Methods: We studied 11 eyes of 11 recurrent retinal detachment cases operated between the years of February 2001 and February 2003. 9 patients were male, and 2 were female. The mean age was 47 years (range 14-75). Patients are followed up for 8-24 months (average 12 months). Vitreoretinal surgery had performed to the cases before and secondary glaucoma due to silicon oil emulsification was detected in all of them. Ocular tension of cases ranged from 24 to 43 mmHg (average 28 mmHg) with applanation. Visual acuities were measured between the hand movements to the 20/100. After the silicon oil removal, epiretinal-subretinal membrane peeling, retinotomy or retinectomy, and endophotocoagulation were performed. Liquid perflourocarbon changed with Perflouropropane gas (16 %)
Results: At the postoperative period retina was re-attached in all of the eyes and mean ocular tensions were measured 16 mmHg (range 10-19 mmHg) with applanation. Visual acuities were unchanged in 4 eyes, increased in 7 eyes.
Conclusion: Better visual and anatomic prognosis can be obtained in cases of recurrent retinal detachment with secondary glaucoma due to silicon oil emulsification performed by vitreoretinal surgery with the aid of perflourocarbon gases.
