Purpose: The purpose of the study is to determine the effectiveness of pars plana vitrectomy, internal tamponade and 360 endolaser photocoagulation in the treatment of retinal detachment (RD) with giant retinal tears .

Materials and Methods: Thirty eyes of 30 patients with giant retinal tears and retinal detachment were included in this study. Standard three-port pars plana vitrectomy, perfluorocarbon liquid and 360 endolaser photocoagulation were performed. A scleral buckle was not used in any case.

Results: The retina was successfully reattached after surgery in all patients. Recurrent retinal detachment was observed in 6 patients during the follow-up period. Patients with recurrent RD were treated with additional vitreoretinal surgery and redetachment was not determined. Silicone oil was removed in 24 eyes after a mean time 6.2 months. The mean follow-up was 13 months.

Conclusion: Successfull anatomic and functional results were observed with no buckle pars plana vitrectomy, internal tamponade and 360 endolaser photocoagulation in the treatment of retinal detachment with giant retinal tears .

Keywords : Giant retinal tear, pars plana vitrectomy, internal tamponade, endolaser photocoagulation.
