THE INCIDENCE OF PSEUDOPHAKIC CYSTOID MACULAR EDEMA AFTER CATARACT SURGERY

Göz Kliniği Purpose: To evaluate the incidence of cystoid macular edema (CME) after standard extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) and phacoemulsification (phaco) in cases without any complication and in cases with posterior capsule rupture and vitreous loss.
Method: 23 eyes of 23 cases who had standard ECCE and posterior chamber Intraocular lens (IOL) implantation (Group 1), 21 eyes of 21 cases who had phaco and .posterior chamber IOL implantation (Group 2), and 18 cases complicated with posterior capsule rupture and vitreous loss with appropriate IOL, implantation including 8 eyes of 8 cases who had ECCE (Group 3) and 10 eyes of 10 cases who had phaco (Group 4) were included in the study. All cases were evaluated on the first day, at 1st, 2nd and 6th week postoperatively and at the postoperative 6th week CME was evaluated by the fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA) in all cases.
Results: At the postoperative 6th week, angiographic CME was not observed in Group 1 and 2. Angiography revealed a characteristic petalloid pattern of CME in 5 cases (62.5%) of Group 3 and 4 cases (40%) of Group 4. When the groups are compared for CME, a statistically significant difference was observed between Group 1 and 3, Group 1 and 4, Group 2 and 3, Group 2 and 4.
Conclusion: It was concluded that, the incidence of pseudophakic CME is increased in complicated cases with posterior capsule rupture and vitreous loss compared to uncomplicated cases.
