İstanbul Retina Enstitüsü Şti. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide on the macular morphology in patients with cystoid macular edema (CME) secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion.

Materials and Methods: Ten eyes of 10 patients with CME secondary to the branch retinal vein occlusion aged 46 to 75 years (average 62.8) made up the study population. After intravitreal injection of 0.1 mL (4 mg) triamcinolone acetonide the visual and anatomic responses were observed. Post-treatment optical coherence tomography changes were evaluated.

Results: Pretreatment optical coherence tomography findings showed the presence of CME in 10 eyes (100%) and the presence of serous macular detachment in 8 eyes (80%). After an injection of triamcinolone acetonide, both CME and serous macular detachment were regressed. At 3 months CME and serous macular detachment had recurred in 4 (40%) and CME recurred in 1 eyes (10%). At 6 months CME and serous macular detachment had recurred in 5 (50%) and CME recurred in 1 eyes (10%). Patients with recurrence were retreated. At 1 month all eyes showed improvement in visual acuity. At 3 months no eyes had lost vision from baseline but recurrent 5 cases (50%) showed decreased visual acuity. At 6 months, again no eyes had lost vision from baseline but recurrent 6 cases (60%) showed decreased visual acuity.

Conclusions: The results of our study showed resolution of CME and serous macular detachment with corresponding improved visual acuity in patients with branch retinal vein occlusion after intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide injection.
