Pars Plana Vitrectomy and Internal Limiting Membrane Removal for Chronic Retinal Vasculitis and Macular Edema in a Patient with Eales’ Disease
Berkant KADERLİ1, Remzi AVCI1
Uludağ Universitesi Tıp Fak., Göz Hast. AD, Bursa Case Report: Eales’ disease is defined as an idiopathic inflammatory disease of young adults characterized by periphlebitis, peripheral non-perfusion, neovascularization and recurrent vitreous haemorrhages. Macular changes are relatively rare (%18) and the most common problem is macular edema. We present a case with chronic retinal periphlebitis and macular edema that showed recurrences after multiple treatment epizodes of panretinal argon laser photocoagulation, systemic, periocular and intravitreal steroids. The retinal phlebitis and macular edema was completely resolved after pars plana vitrectomy, posterior hyaloid and internal limiting membrane removal and did not recur during the 15 months follow-up period. Vitrectomy and internal limiting membrane removal should be considered as a treatment option in cases of Eales’ disease with resistant retinal periphlebitis and macular edema. Keywords : Eales’ disease, macular edema, treatment
