Purpose: This study was performed to determine whether hyperhomocysteinemia is a risk factor for retinal vein occlussion

Materials and Methods: We studied between january 2001 and december 2004 diagnosed central retinal vein occlusion (RVO) (ischemic type) with control groups.Matched plasma homocysteine levels. Measurements serum homocysteine levels were performed using HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography). Chi Square test, T-test, Mann-Whitney test were used as statistical analysis.

Results: We studied 36 consecutive patients (20 females, 16 males) with retinal vein occlusions and 36 controls (20 females, 16 males). The mean age of patients was 62.0 years, control groups was 64.5 years. The mean total serum homocysteine levels of RVO groups was 14.19 μmol/lt (5,1-89,0μmol/lt) and control groups mean plasma homocysteine levels was 13.80 μmol/lt (6,1-25,0μmol/lt). There is no significant diference between two groups acording to Mann-Whitney test (p>0,05).

Conclusion: Hyperhomocysteinemia is not a risk factor for central retinal vein occlusion. Keywords : Homocysteine, retinal vein occlusion
