Objective: To present surgical outcomes of two patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) who underwent internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling surgery due to macular edema .

Case Report: Two patients who had macular edema due to retinitis pigmentosa underwent pars plana vitrectomy and ILM peeling surgery with indocyanine green (ICG) staining. In both cases preoperative visual acuities were worse than 0.1 (Snellen lines). Clinically, there was thickening of ILM and macular edema in both cases. Pars plana vitrectomy and ILM peeling with ICG staining and sulfur hexafluoride gas (SF6) injection were performed. In one case, ILM could not be peeled off completely because of retinal pigment atrophy. In both cases, macular edema resolved and visual acuity improved, postoperatively.

Conclusion: In patients with RP cases, vitrectomy with ILM peeling may be helpful in the treatment of macular edema and may improve the visual acuity to some degree. Keywords : Retinitis pigmentosa, macular edema, ILM
