Purpose: To use optical coherence tomography (OCT) for measuring retinal and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness and disc diameter and evaluation of the images in rabbits.
Materials and Methods: Fifteen pigmented rabbits were used in this study. Retinal and RNFL thicknesses were measured inferior to the optic disc. RNFL thickness of the medullary wing was evaluated nasal to the optic disc. All thickness values were determined automatically, except for the optic disc measurement. Histological sections were correlated with OCT images in one of the eyes.
Results: Mean macular retinal and RNFL thicknesses were 140.67±7.54 μm and 26.16±5.92 μm, respectively. Mean RNFL thickness nasal to the optic disc was 196.03±37.69 μm. Mean optic disc diameter was 2882.94±320.21 μm. A third hyperreflective band outer to the hyperreflectivity from retinal pigment epithelium-choriocapillaris complex was visualized by OCT scan.
Conclusion: OCT is a convenient, noninvasive method to determine the effect of several interventions on the retina or optic disc in rabbits.
