Treatment Outcomes of Argon Laser Photocoagulation and Photodynamic Therapy in Choroidal Neovascularization Related to Angioid Streaks

Purpose: To evaluate the results of argon laser photocoagulation treatment and photodynamic therapy of choroidal neovascularization secondary to angioid streaks.

Materials and Methods: Twenty-six eyes of 23 patients with choroidal neovascularization secondary to angioid streaks were reviewed. Eight patients who had a follow-up shorter than six months were excluded. Eighteen eyes of 15 patients were enrolled into the study group. Ten eyes of eight patients were treated with argon laser photocoagulation. Photodynamic therapy was performed in eight eyes of seven patients.

Results: The mean follow-up was 29 months (Range, 6-108 months) in argon laser photocoagulation treatment group. Choroidal neovascularization was extrafoveal in six eyes (60%), and juxtafoveal in four eyes (40%). Best-corrected visual acuity increased in three eyes (30%), decreased in five eyes (50%) and remained stable in two eyes (20%) after treatment. The mean follow-up was 23 months (Range, 9-36 months) in photodynamic therapy group. Subfoveal choroidal neovascularization was noted in seven eyes (87.5%) and in one eye (12.5%) choroidal neovascularization was juxtafoveal. Best-corrected visual acuity increased in two eyes (25%), decreased in two eyes (25%) and remained stable in four eyes (50%) after treatment.

Conclusion: Argon laser photocoagulation treatment for extrafoveal choroidal neovascularization and photodynamic therapy for juxtafoveal and subfoveal choroidal neovascularization secondary to angioid streaks may slow down visual loss.
