Purpose: To investigate and discuss our results in patients having proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) that underwent pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) .

Materials and Methods: PPV results of 146 eyes of 121 patients with PDR (ages between 37-71, Female/Male: 69/52) between March 2001- December 2004 were studied retrospectively. Preoperative and postoperative ocular findings, visual acuity and intraoperative and postoperative complications were documented. Lens extraction was performed when needed. Operations were performed with standart three-port PPV setting. Core vitrectomy, dissection and excision of membranes, removal of the tractions, retinotomy and retinectomy, liquid and gas perflorocarbone, intravitreal triamcinolone injection, silicone oil, endolaser, circling scleral buckling procedures were applied.

Results: There were tractional retinal detachment in 75 eyes (51%), dense vitreous hemorrhage in 67 eyes (46%), cataract causing difficulty in visualisation of the posterior segment in 43 eyes (29%), tractional-rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in 32 eyes (22%), anterior proliferative vitreoretinopathy in 19 eyes (13%). Retinal reattachment was obtained in 81 eyes (76%). Visual acuity improved in 79 eyes (54%), remained same in 51 eyes (35%) and decreased in 16 eyes (11%).

Conclusion: PPV procedure has favorable effects on the anatomical and visual prognosis in eyes with PDR. Keywords : Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy, Pars Plana Vitrectomy
