Vitreoretinal surgery was carried out on patient having retinal detachment, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, travmatic vitreous hemorrhage and 90º retinal dialysis at the inferior quadrant of retina. The retention of submacular perfluorocarbon liquid (PFCL) was observed postoperatively and repeated vitreoretinal surgery was carried out. Submacular PFCL was removed by using passive aspiration and proliferative vitreoretinal bands were extracted. Silicone oil tamponade was used. No retinal detachment and complication was observed during the followup period (six month). The causes of retention of submacular perfluorocarbon liquid after the first operation include the use of silicone oil tamponade, the lack of a balanced salt solution (BSS) rinse and the presence of large retinal dialysis. Subretinal PFCL retention frequently occurs in eyes with large retinotomies. BSS rinse is a useful method in the prevention of subretinal PFCL. The retention of submacular perfluorocarbon liquid causes retinal toxicity in the short term. After retained submacular perfluorocarbon liquid is removed successfully, good anatomic and functional results are obtained.
