Clinical and Fluorescein Angiographic Features in Cases, with Ocular Ischemic Syndrome

Purpose: To evaluate the clinical and fluorescein angiographic (FA) findings in the cases with 'Ocular ischemic syndrome'(OIS)
Material and Methods: Seventeen eyes of 14 cases with OIS were included this study. The measurements of best corrected visual acuity, anterior and posterior segment examinations of cases with OİS were performed and FA was recorded.
Results: Rubeosis iridis was determined in 8 eyes with OIS (47.1%) and 2 eyes had neovascular glaucoma (11.8%). Fundus examination was revealed midperipheral retinal haemorrhages in all eyes with OIS. Retinal venous dilatation without tortuosity was found in 9 eyes, cherry red spot in the macular area was seen in 4 eyes. There was retinal neovascularization in one eye, cotton wool spot in one eye and microaneurysms in 7 eyes. Anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, optic disc pale, optic disc neovascularization, retinal arterial sclerosis and narrowing, the findings due to sequel of retinal artery occlusion, intraarterial embolic plaque were the another findings of posterior segment. The fluorescein angiographic signs of OIS included patchy choroidal filling in 5 eyes, increased retinal arteriovenous circulation time in 8 eyes, delayed arm-retina time in 9 eyes, areas of retinal capillary non-perfusion in 5 eyes.
Conclusion: It is very important to diagnose the OİS and to recognise significantly compromised carotid circulation in most cases of OIS, so life threatening neurological or cardiovascular complications can be prevented. In this study, we stressed the variety of clinical and angiographic findings in cases with OIS.
