Retinopathy is the most prevalent microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus. Untreated proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) cases with high risk characteristics are likely to suffer severe visual loss. In general; the visual loss due to PDR is secondary to complications such as vitreous hemorrhage, diabetic macular edema and tractional retinal detachment. The vision can be restored in case of a surgical management of the complications mentioned.
Through the developing course of vitreous surgery in PDR; significant progress, involving the severe retinal complications of diabetes, has been achieved. Besides the growing surgical experience, the increment of information about the pathogenesis and the recent innovations of technology and pharmacotherapy has broadened the horizons of PDR.
Along the evolution; early complications of diabetic retinopathy has been added on the expanding scale of surgical indications. At the present; PDR surgery has become a promising, safe and effective method of treatment.
