Purpose: To evaluate serum levels of total antioxidant capacity, total oxidant status, and dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate in Behcet’s Disease.
Materials and Methods: Serum samples were taken from 43 patients with Behcet’s disease and 41 age- and sexmatched healthy subjects. The levels of TAC and TOS were measured by spectrophotometry and the level of DHEA-S was measured by autoanalyzer.
Results: Serum TAC, TOS, and DHEA-S levels were 1.69±0.53 mmol/L, 23.70±20.12 μmol/L, and 208.77±98.71 μg/ dl in the Behcet group, respectively. In the control group, these levels were 2.79±0.39 mmol/L, 14.55±7.90 μmol/L, and 237.08±147.39 μg/dl, respectively. The serum TAC levels were significantly lower (p<0.05) and the serum TOS levels were significantly higher (p<0.05) in the Behcet group compared with the control group. There were no significant differences in DHEA-S levels between the groups (p>0.05).
Conclusion: Increased TOD levels and decreased TAC levels indicate increased oxidative stress, which may play a role in the pathogenesis of Behcet’s disease.
Keywords : Behcet’s disease, oxidative stress
