Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy and complications of 5000 centistokes (cs) silicone oil as a tamponade in pars plana vitrectomy (PPV).
Materials and Methods: This study involved 24 eyes of 24 patients who underwent PPV and 5000 cs silicone oil tamponade for complicated retinal detachment. Indications for surgery were traumatic retinal detachment (n=11), pseudophakic retinal detachment (n=5), rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (n=3), diabetic tractional retinal detachment (n=3), and recurrent retinal detachment (n=2). The efficacy, complications, postoperative anatomic and visual success or recurrence rates after use of 5000 cs silicone oil tamponade were evaluated.
Results: Mean follow-up time was 7 months (range 3-16 months). At the last follow-up, the overall anatomical success rate was 70.8% and visual improvement was achieved in 33.3% of eyes. Recurrent retinal detachment was observed in 20.8% of eyes. Phthisis bulbi occurred in 8.4% of eyes. The other postoperative complications were transient intraocular pressure rise (6 eyes), band keratopathy (3 eyes), silicon oil in the anterior chamber due to emulsification (2 eyes), and development of cataract (1 eye).
Conclusion: Use of 5000 cs silicone oil in addition to PPV improves postoperative anatomic and visual success rates in eyes with complicated retinal detachment.
