Complications of Diabetic Retinopathy Therapy
Tunç OVALI
İ.Ü. İstanbul Tıp Fakültesi Hastanesi Göz Hastalıkları A.D., İstanbul, Prof. Dr. Grid and panretinal photocoagulation, intravitreal drug injection and vitreoretinal surgery were the main therapeutic methods in the treatment of diabetic retinopathy. The main reasons for therapies complications were the high energy levels used for laser photocoagulations and localisation failures. The high energy levels can also lead to burns of the corneal ephitelium, lens and iris. Epiretinal membrane formation, intraocular pressure rise, macular edema, visual field defect, macula and optic disc damage, choroidal detachment, choroidal neovascular membrane formation and vitreus haemorrhage can occur as complications after laser photocogulation. Intravitreal drug injection can lead to conjunctival haemorrhage, lens or retina damage and also to elevated intraocular pressure levels and endophthalmitis. After vitreoretinal surgery vitreus haemorrhage or re-bleeding, elevated intraocular pressure, cataract progression or formation, endophthalmitis or anterior hyaloidal fibrovascular proliferation can be seen. Keywords : Diabetic retinopathy, complications of therapy, grid photocoagulation, panretinal photocoagulation, intravitreal drug injection, vitreoretinal surgery.
