Early-Stage Optic Coherence Tomography Findings Observed in Retinal Artery Occlusions

Purpose: To investigate the early-stage optic coherence tomography findings of retinal artery occlusions.

Materials and Methods: Retinal findings of patients admitted to ophthalmology departments with complaints of sudden loss of vision and diagnosed with retinal artery occlusions were evaluated with optic coherence tomography (OCT). The findings were compared with normal eye findings.

Findings: There were 9 patients (2 women, 7 men) in total, with a mean age of 56.44±18.17 (24-75) years. Five patients had central retinal artery occlusions (CRAOs) and 4 had upper temporal retinal artery occlusions. Patients with CRAOs had increased thickness and reflectivity in the inner retinal layers and decreased reflectivity in retinal pigment epithelium-choriocapillaris layers in macular OCT examinations. In patients with retinal artery branch occlusion, similar findings were only present in areas affected by ischemia. All the patients in the study had reflectivity patterns within normal limits in the foveal region.

Conclusion: During the early stages of retinal artery occlusions, reflectivity and thicknesses of inner retinal layers increase in OCT examinations. This results in the masking of outer retinal layers. Keywords : Blindness, low vision, optical coherence tomography, retinal arterial occlusion.
